Is this written by a professional?
No. It is written by one man who was the drinker in his own family, not the relative of one. James drank daily from eighteen to forty-five, went into residential treatment in Cheshire in June 2020, and has not drunk since. He is not a doctor, an addiction clinician, a counsellor, an interventionist, a social worker or a solicitor. The vantage point, and its limits, are set out in full.
Will you tell me which clinic to use?
No. Not one, not a shortlist, not by name, not if you ask directly. Naming clinics is how this subject gets monetised, and once a site does it you can no longer tell advice from advertising. What to ask any service in writing is published instead.
Am I enabling him?
This site will not answer that as a character question, because it is not one. The useful version is specific: does this particular thing, done this time, make the drinking easier to continue, or does it keep somebody housed, fed, out of court or alive? That is worked through here.
Should I cut contact?
Not a question this site will answer in either direction. You have to live in the family that exists afterwards. What it will say is that the decisions people regret are the ones taken in a single bad week without being said out loud to anybody.
Can I make him get treatment?
If he is an adult, no — not in most places, and not without narrow legal circumstances judged by a doctor rather than a family. That is not a failure of will on your part. Legal questions of that kind need a professional where you live.
Who pays for this site?
Readers, through membership at the network console. No clinic, broker, treatment provider, fellowship, insurer or medication company has ever paid for content, placement, mention or a link on this network, and no referral fee has ever been accepted. The one declared interest is that James was a paying patient at a private clinic in 2020, named on the about page, which has never paid for anything here and is not recommended.
Is what I type private?
It is not read by a person and it is not monitored. It is also not privileged or confidential in any legal sense, so do not name him, his employer, his clinic or your solicitor, and do not paste documents. If this has become a legal or safeguarding matter, the detail belongs with a professional.
Why is there no telephone number anywhere?
Because numbers differ by country and change, and a wrong number is worse than none. The safety page names the routes and the number is the one where you are.
